"And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."  2 Timothy 2:2

What is a Mentor?

The term "mentoring" is one that many people use freely but don't necessarily understand its true meaning and significance.  It is likely that many of the role models in the faith that we admire today at one time had a genuine mentor to thank for their success.  At FUMC, a mentor is a growing and trusted elder in the faith who is willing to come alongside a younger brother or sister to guide, model, and teach them in the ways of God and the traditions of faith that we hold dear.

Our Approach in Selecting Mentors

The approach that we adopted this year in searching for mentors has been well thought through and covered in prayer.  Most of our mentors were hand-picked by the students during the registration process.  We listened carefully as students and parents gave prayerful consideration to the elders in the faith that they desired to see come alongside them over the next 6 months and beyond.  The input from our students and parents only add tremendous value to the role that mentors will play in the Confirmation process.

The Mentoring and Discipleship Process

Confirmation will begin on Sunday, September 9th at 9:10am with Student Orientation and Meet Your Mentor Sunday!  Students will have an opportunity to spend a few minutes getting to know their mentors and will meet other students registered for Confirmation.

The following Sunday, September 16th will be the first gathering of mentors with their students.  Most mentors have been assigned two students this year.  Each mentor with their students will gather for Small Groups with another mentor and their students every other Sunday at 9:10am in the Church.  Small Groups will be assigned during Student Orientation and Meet Your Mentor Sunday on September 9th.

Mentors and Students will work through a discipleship process using a resource called "Master Life: Developing a Rich Personal Relationship with the Master," published by Broadman & Holman Publishers.  Both mentors and students will be expected to work through 1 chapter per week and come prepared to discuss the material and discussion questions in Small Groups.  We believe that both mentor and student will profit from this process.

Will there be an Orientation Session for Mentors?

Absolutely!

We are offering two Orientation Sessions for Mentors.  The first is scheduled for Sunday, August 26th immediately following the 10am Worship Service.  If you are unable to attend this session, another will be scheduled for the following Sunday, September 2nd immediately following the 10:30am Worship Service.

We will discuss the Confirmation process in greater detail, will answer any questions that you may have, and will distribute the materials that you will be using.  All mentors are asked to bring a check for $15 to Orientation to cover expenses for the materials.

Checks are payable to "FUMC."  Also, please make a notation of "Confirmation Registration" in the memo field.

Attendance Expectations for Students

A Confirmation Calendar can be downloaded by visiting the "Confirmation" tab to the left and selecting the "2007-2008 Confirmation Schedule."  Student participation is expected in the following: attend 1 Worship Service per week (Saturday at 7pm, Sunday at 8am or 10:30am), attend the  Pastor's Class and Mentor Sessions as noted on the Confirmation Schedule.  Students are also expected to meet once a month outside of the church with their mentor in a social setting.  Mentors can take students bowling at Strike Zone Alley's in Pottsville, go for a bite to eat at McDonald's, or sip a cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts...just to name a few ideas.

We allow up to 3 unexcused absenses.  Students will be expected to make up any missed sessions by completing assignments given by the Pastors or Mentors.  All special events are mandatory, such as the Fall and Spring Retreats, and the show scheduled at Sight & Sound in Lancaster.

If Students cannot commit to the Confirmation Schedule, they will be asked to withdraw and to consider joining our next Confirmation Class, scheduled for the 2009-2010 School Year.
